What: Preventing waste from packaging outside the home

Where: Province-wide

Why: To inform the development of policy approaches that will improve the prevention and recycling of non-residential packaging waste in communities across B.C.

Engagement summary

In spring and summer 2024, the ministry published a discussion paper (PDF, 10MB) to seek feedback on how to prevent packaging waste from non-residential sources, also known as the Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) sector.  

The non-residential (ICI) sector includes diverse sources of waste, including: 

  • Light industrial sources such as agriculture, manufacturing, and jobsites 
  • Businesses such as retail stores, tourism, and restaurants  
  • Institutions including hospitals, schools, and universities

Results

The ministry received feedback from the public, First Nations, local governments, businesses, institutions, producers, industry, waste management service providers and other interested parties through: 

  • Information sharing sessions: 9 info sessions with over 300 participants
  • Workshops: 2 interactive workshops for representatives of interested parties (28 and 27 attendees)
  • Written submissions: 69 written submissions 
  • Public survey: 615 responses 

Indigenous roundtables: Indigenous Peoples were invited to participate in 3 virtual engagement sessions.

Input from this engagement will be used to work towards identifying policy approaches to keep packaging materials out of our landfills and the environment.
